Preventive Dentistry
Preventive dentistry is the unglamorous half of the job. It is also the half that decides whether you spend the next twenty years in a chair or out of one.
What prevention covers here
Prevention is not one treatment. It is a set of small, cheap things done on a sensible rhythm: examinations that catch change early, hygiene visits that remove what you cannot, sealants on the teeth most likely to decay, fluoride where the risk is real, and a night guard if you grind.
The practice was built on relationship-based care, and prevention is where that actually shows. A hygienist who has charted your gums for six years spots a change a stranger reads as your normal.
- Examinations and oral cancer screening
- Professional cleanings
- Sealants for children and teenagers
- Fluoride for higher-risk mouths
- Night guards for grinding
- Home care coached on your own teeth
The arithmetic nobody puts on a poster
Every expensive thing that happens in a mouth started as something small. The decision that made it expensive was usually waiting, and waiting is rarely a decision anyone makes on purpose.
Problems escalate in one direction
Decay does not reverse once it is through the enamel. It moves toward the nerve at its own pace, and each stage it passes adds an appointment and a bigger restoration.
Bone does not grow back
Gum disease that has taken bone has taken it. Treatment stops the loss and holds the position. That is why catching it at the bleeding stage matters so much.
Rhythm beats intensity
Two ordinary visits a year, every year, does far more than one heroic year of treatment after a decade away.
What a preventive plan looks like
Yours will not be identical to anyone else in your household.
Built from your risk, not a template
Diet, medication, smoking, dry mouth, how your teeth are shaped and what has already happened all change the interval and the measures.
Protection where it is worth having
Sealants go on the deep grooves of back teeth. Fluoride goes where the risk justifies it. Neither is applied to everyone as a matter of course.
Reviewed out loud every visit
What changed, what worked, what did not. A plan that is never revisited stops being a plan after about a year.
Why this practice leans on prevention
Their own mission, in their words: to build a long-term relationship between staff and dental patients and to provide quality, consumer friendly dental services the whole family can value in a happy environment.
-
01
Evidence-based guidance is one of their five values
Advice here follows what the evidence supports rather than what is fashionable that year.
-
02
Compassion is the first value, and it is not decoration
People who have been away for years, or who are frightened, get a longer appointment and a different order of treatment.
-
03
The whole family in one practice
Grandparent, parent and toddler on the same morning is normal here, and it is how habits actually carry down a household.
-
04
Nothing is sold to fill an appointment
If there is nothing to do, that is what you will be told, and it gets written in your notes as a clean examination.
How prevention runs across a year
For most adults this is three or four appointments, none of them long.
The examination
Soft tissue, gums, teeth, bite and existing work, plus images when they will change a decision. This sets the plan.
Hygiene visits on your interval
Two for most people, three or four where the gum chart calls for it.
Targeted protection
Sealants, fluoride or a night guard, fitted to what the examination found rather than offered to everybody.
A review, not a repeat
At the next examination we compare charts rather than starting again. Direction of travel is the useful number.
What prevention costs against what it prevents
We cannot quote your treatment from a table. We can show you the shape of it.
| If this is caught at | What it usually takes | Appointments |
|---|---|---|
| Early decay in enamel | Watching, fluoride, a change at home | None extra |
| Decay into dentine | A filling | One |
| Decay reaching the nerve | Root canal treatment and usually a crown | Two to four |
| Tooth no longer restorable | Extraction, then a decision about replacing it | Two or more, plus the replacement |
| Gum inflammation | Hygiene visits and better home care | Existing interval |
| Gum disease with bone loss | Deeper cleaning, then lifelong maintenance | Three to four a year, ongoing |
Every figure the practice quotes is written down after an examination, because it depends on what is actually there. Call 441 292 0107 and ask.
Questions patients actually ask
Do not see yours here. Call the practice on 441 292 0107 and ask. Nobody minds the question.
Call 441 292 0107Is preventive dentistry covered by insurance in Bermuda?
Most dental plans here cover examinations and cleanings at some level, and many cover a set number per year. The amount reimbursed and the annual maximum vary by plan, so check directly with CG Insurance, Argus or BF&M.
Our insurance and payment page lists what to ask them.
My teeth feel fine. Do I still need to come?
Feeling fine is not the same as being fine, because decay and gum disease are both quiet for a long time. That is the whole argument for a schedule rather than a symptom.
Does fluoride go on everyone?
No. It is used where the risk justifies it: a history of decay, a dry mouth, orthodontic appliances, or a diet that keeps acid on the teeth through the day.
At what age should my child first be seen?
Before their third birthday, and earlier is fine. Examinations for children under three are free at this practice, which exists so the first visit happens before anything hurts. See children’s dentistry.
I grind my teeth. Is that a preventive problem?
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest to deal with. A custom night guard protects against wear and cracking, and the cost of one is a fraction of the crown it is protecting against.
